December 17 2007 - Today Governor Corzine of New Jersey signed into law a bill abolishing the death penalty in his state. David Kacynski, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty, released the following statement hailing the event:

“Those of us who have struggled against the death penalty as an inefficient, inhumane, unworkable and unnecessary response to crime join in saluting the state of New Jersey, which today became the first state to legislatively abolish capital punishment.

“The New Jersey action follows closely on developments in New York State, which achieved de facto abolition in October . . .” More

Court of Appeals Finds NY Death Penalty Is Still Unconstitutional!

October 23 2007 – Today the New York State Court of Appeals refused to make an exception to its 2004 ruling that New York’s death penalty law is unconstitutional. Below is David Kaczynski’s comment on the Court’s decision.

“The Court of Appeals made the right decision in overturning NY’s last remaining death sentence in People v. Taylor. Today's decision is entirely consistent with the Court’s 2004 ruling in People v. Lavalle, which found the state’s 1995 capital punishment statute unconstitutional because of a flawed and coercive jury deadlock instruction.

“Today’s ruling is also in step with a marked change in public attitudes toward the death penalty in New York, as measured by public opinion polls.” More
